This evening, unexpectedly, I became a pedestrian again.
It wouldn't have been so unexpected a turn of events if I hadn't been determinedly avoiding thinking about the growing gap between my car's maintenance needs and the maintenance schedule my budget allowed for. Now, however, I can consider my avoidance strategy vindicated. The car won't be going anywhere for a good while, therefore needs no maintenance, and so the issue requires no thinking about. Simple, really. No problem. I'll walk (or catch a bus, but I'll still call myself a pedestrian).
-- I weren't lookin' for no detour, but that detour came lookin' for me --

Re: Many more feet in any direction
Sun, October 17, 2004 - 5:33 PMThis happened to me a couple of months ago, although it was more a matter of my car being old and ready to die. I sold it to a junkyard and I've been walking, biking and busing instead. It's been nice - I feel healthier.
Pretty soon I'll break down and buy some cheap transportation, though, because it's starting to get cold here and I won't be as enthusiastic about this once the temperatures drop below freezing. -

B-b-b-b-b-below freezing?
Sun, October 17, 2004 - 10:26 PMEvery spring I consider getting rid of my car completely, and every autumn when it starts to drop below 10C regularly I come to the realisation that I NEED a car. Really... -

Re: B-b-b-b-b-below freezing?
Sun, October 17, 2004 - 10:40 PMI do enjoy the benefits of us having a car. It reduces a 1H15m bus journey to/from work to a 30 minutes ride. But if we didn't have a car I would take that bus. I can deal with public transport.
Winter? Ah yes, I vaguely remember that. In an alternate universe Sandi and I didn't move from Dallas to Los Angeles, but to Chicago. I suspect our marriage would have lasted about as long as the first really big freeze to descend on the windy city.
Of course, after 7 years in various climatologically mellow states like CA and TX, my blood has thinned as well. Snow? AAAARGGHHHHH! -

Thanks be to THIS universe:
Mon, October 18, 2004 - 3:55 PMthe best one available to us! (Beats Chicago, at least.) -

Re: Many more feet in any direction
Sun, October 17, 2004 - 11:07 PMI am in a household with two vehicles and only one person who can drive - Me.
The Jaguar is a personal indulgence and quite capable of being my every day car, but it is a lot more expensive on fuel, and I dont want to wear it out.
The Falcon is an ex-taxi and hence runs on LPG (gas, not petrol) and is therefore 60% cheaper to run. However, it is a very very bog standard model with no frills including no radio whatsoever, and worth about $50 if I was to try and sell it. So while it still runs, I drive it... and when it breaks down I almost have to fix it, because its worth less than nothing to me then.

Mon, October 18, 2004 - 3:48 PMThe big cat would get better fuel economy at 110km/h, wouldn't it? -

What's public transport like where you live? ... or is it a small enough place to walk everywhere?
