Driving home today, I caught a glimpse (between passes of the windscreen wipers) of a woman at a bus stop lighting a cigarette. And I thought: "Aha! That's what my life is missing - a vice." What is there that, when I feel under pressure, I can give up to achieve a quick boost of virtuosity and perhaps also health, finances or other ancillary benefits?
There's the internet, I suppose, but that's not a vice, that's life-blood. And sugar, but I couldn't do without that. Caffeine? Pedanticism? (*L* usagi and I just had a short discussion about spelling caffeine - she reminded me of the rule: "'i' before 'e', except after 'c'", and I protested that a 'c' four letters antecedent didn't count.) Non sequiturs? Puns! No! Absolutely not! I couldn't give up puns!
So, perhaps I'm not entirely free of vices, but I don't have one that's any good for giving up. Any suggestions?

Tue, August 30, 2005 - 4:58 PMUm... have you given up cargo cults?
I have a periodic need to do a news fast now and then, but my guess is that you don't overindulge in media anyway. -

Damn straight! The nice thing about that is, when someone tells me the news, it's always news to me!
I think my fling with cargo cults was destined to be brief... -

Media!
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 6:33 PMRoger Waters got it -
"The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more"
I've got the whole thing sorted. My paper boy only comes 'round once a week, and I invite the sparkly loonies in even less often.
